Dondria

Phenomenal was the night on April 1st as Dondria performed in her first appearance in her native Dallas, TX.  The concert was “Impressive” and the house was packed in the Clarence Muse Theatre of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters.  Dondria’s Dallas debut could not have been improved upon.

I was pleased as punch as I listened to Dondria sing.  It was a live performance, and yet the sound was even better than what you would hear on the radio.  Her voice is crystal clear, crisp and sharp, and her transitions from one octave to another are as smooth as a baby’s bottom; she scales the note register with ease.  There is definitely no studio tricks with her voice.  Dondria is ”pure” talent and an eloquent ”songbird”.  This beautiful young lady also has a fabulous stage presence and she is very engaging with an amazing interaction with her audience.

The night was highlighted with the compliment of outstanding music from Ultra Sound, as they and Dondria created magic on the stage.  The only sound greater than Dondria’s voice was the exceptional sweet noise coming from the band.  Ultra Sound and Dondria were a perfect team, making each song that was performed into a “hot” track that you would blast from your radio and play repeatedly on your CD player.

Dondria’s passion is original; she wrote the songs, so she truly relates to the lyrics and her delivery allows others to relate as well.  Dondria is a rising “Star” and a sensational Artist.  Without a doubt, she will be around for many years to come.

Mirror Mirror is an exciting stage play that forces you to take a look in the mirror.  It makes you ask the question, who do you see; do you see yourself or do you see an image of that person you believe is your soulmate?  Do you see an image of God?

The soulmate that you are searching for, do they reflect the image of God?  Examine yourself.  What are you really looking for when searching for that souldmate and what qualities must they possess?  You can spend your whole life searching for that special someone if you are not looking for the right things.

Mirror Mirror addresses the results of the choices that we make when searching for the one we desire to be our soulmate.  It gives us an example of how there is no peace if we have not found that special someone who is a reflection of God.  Mirror Mirror will make you laugh and it will make you cry, it will make you think seriously about a lot of issue, and then it will make you laugh again.

Jerri Fondren wrote, co-directed, and starred in the play.  A native of Memphis, TN, Jerri was born into a musical family, which naturally enabled her to be a “phenomenal” singer/songwriter.  Her other skills and talents have enabled her to also be a director and a producer.  Jerri produced the TV Show, Jazz Gospel Beatz.  Jerri now resides in Dallas, TX  where she continues to keep the magic going as she continues to write and produce events to benefit the Kingdom of God.

Jerri’s life experience of dealing with relationships is what lead her to write Mirror Mirror, in efforts of informing and encouraging others to wait on God.   The co-star of this play has a rare and priceless talent that allows him to act, sing, and provide comic relief.  His list of accomplishments is extensive, and his potential success is limitless.  Rick Bernard James, remember his name because you will see it again, and again, and again.

Everyone in the play has a beautiful singing voice, but Apostle Darrell Yancey is the one who brings the house down with his performance.  You will not be able to sit in your seat when Apostle Yancey gets on the mic.  If you have never heard applause so loud that it sounds like thunder, you will after Apostle sings.  Not only does he capture the audience with his singing, but he catches them with his comedic talents as well.

Playing one of the supporting roles is DFW’s own Ms. Carmina Barnett from KHVN Heaven 97.  Carmina lends her beautiful voice to the dynamic singing performances throughout the play, as well as her pleasantly surprising comedic talent.  Carmina is the host of the Midday Inspiration Radio Show on KHVN.  She is also the host of the Home Grown Gospel Show which spotlights up and coming gospel artists from the DFW Metroplex.  Carmina is the Vice-President of the Dallas Chapter of the Gospel Announcer’s Guild and a Board Member of the Texas Gospel Announcer’s Guild.  Among Carmina’s many accomplishments and awards is her nomination for the Gospel Announcer of the Year for the 2010 Stellar Awards.

There are several other talented and accomplished members of the cast that add to the success of this play.  If the play had to be described in one word that word would be….”Encore”!

Fantastic was the night as “gospel” took center stage with the NFL Players Choir and the “Who’s Who” in the Gospel Music Industry at the 2011 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration.

Irael Houghton was a part of the never ending excitement of the night.  Irael wowed the crowd and ushered in the Holy Spirit with his heart-felt performance and set the tone for the entire evening.

Each and every performer brought so much energy, showmanship, and passion to their performances, it made the entire place electricfying, and the audience was uplifted to heights beyond the stars.  James Fortune, Israel Houghton, CeCe Winans, Mary Mary, Marvin Sapp, and Donnie McClurkin were all at their best last night, but they were not the only ones.  The NFL Players Choir stole the show with their incredible performances, directed by Myron Butler.  The choir is strong with talent and great vocals, with no shortage of members who can take the lead and carry the show; “Amazing”.

Then came the Voices of Destiny of Greater Zion Church from Los Angeles, California.  They are the 2010 “Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound” competition winners who refused to take a back seat at last night’s celebration.  That choir made it very clear why they were winners.  To sum them up in one word….”phenomenal”.

The night continued to get better and better as NFL Hall of Fame member Emmit Smith and his wife Pat made an appearance to give thanks to everyone on behalf of their charities.  The list of celebrity sightings, as well as NFL player sightings was endless last night.  The 2011 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration was a huge hit and I can not wait for it to come back to Texas.

Ja'Maal Buster Eyelash Guru to the Stars

It is said that when Ja’Maal Buster holds a woman’s face in his hands and looks into her eyes, his goal is to make her look and feel a little more beautiful.  Ja’Maal is an expert artist in false eyelash application; a custom tailor of lashes for each unique feature of a woman.

A native of Texarkana, TX, Ja’Maal moved to Dallas the day he graduated from high school.  He set out to learn about the finest fashion, art, and music, and after six years he headed to Detroit where he was first introduced to eyelash artistry.  Fascinated by what he saw, Ja’Maal decided to teach himself on the process because he was tired of using everyone else’s lashes when they would not lie on his customer’s eyes the way he wanted them to.  He tested his skills on friends and the word spread like wild fire, and then his appointment book quickly swelled to capacity.  In only a year’s time, Ja’Maal went from being the Assistant Store Manager at Dolce & Gabbana to obtaining a factory to custom make his own eyelash product line and opening Fabulous Lashes by Ja’Maal Buster, the first eyelash salon in the country.

Now dubbed by the media as “The Eylelash Guru” to the Stars, Ja’Maal’s artistry has been viewed in world-wide publications such as the Dallas Morning News, Entertainment Hollywood, TV Guide, LA-Story.com, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Daily Candy (Dallas and Atlanta), Modern Luxury (Dallas and Atlanta), Upscale, Style Network, Beverly Hills, and the  list goes on.  In 2006, Modern Luxury (Dallas) honored Ja’Maal as one of Dallas’ Illustrious Men of Style, and Vogue named Ja’Maal as one of the country’s top eyelash experts.

Ja’Maal is also now a media personality and he has appeared on Good Morning Texas, CBS 11 Morning Show (Dallas), KTLA Morning Show, UPN21’s The Daily Buzz, and The Wendy Williams Show.  Ja’Maal has now secured spots to display and sell his products on the QVC show.

Ja’Maal’s celebrity clients include: Jane Fonda, Paula Abdul, Rihanna, Lisa Rinna, Paris Hilton, Audrina Partridge, Taryn Manning, Shenae Arimes, Lauren London, Michelle Williams, LeToya Luckett, Cicely Tyson, Keri Hilson, Kelis, Keyshia Cole, Candis Cayne, Milly Sims, Toccara Jones, Trina, Dania Ramirez, Samantha Harris, Debra Messing, and too many others to name.

Though incredibly successful and constantly surrounded by high profile celebrities, Ja’Maal is shy and humble.  Yet when it comes to his work, he is confident, a tiger salesman and go-getter.  He has many projects going on and in the works, including preparing to launch his product line in the U.K.  Ja’Maal has already reached the Stars, and now he is looking to reach beyond.

To learn more about Ja’Maal Buster and his products, visit www.jamaalbuster.com, and look for him to appear at a beauty workshop or showing near you.

Beautiful is the heart that constantly yearns to do for others.  Phenomenal is the strength the refuels itself at the brink of exhaustion.  Profound is the faith that believes beyond what the eyes can see.  Fearless is the mind that has the courage to move forward in hope, when all appears to be hopeless.  All of these things and more are personified through the actions of Crystal Stone and all the partners in Tamar Entertainment Inc.

Founded by Mary Terry Wiley and Sheryl Holland in 2001, Tamar Entertainment was birthed out of the vision of Mary and Sheryl’s desire to have a company that could be used as a vehicle to nurture, train, and catapult the gifts and talents of kids with performing arts abilities to the ultimate level of success. Tamar Entertainment Inc. is a non-profit company dedicated to promoting personal growth and professional development of young people, and they provide education, a mentorship program, vocational training, fine arts and recreation (i.e. Music, Dance, Theatrical Productions, and Literary and Printed Media), support of amateur athletics, and personal and empowerment workshops and seminars to financially challenged children.

Mary Terry Wiley has been a Psychiatric Nurse of 18 years, and Mary is also a Playwright.  Mary wrote the play “For Your Soul’s Sake” more than 20 years ago, but never did anything with it.  Then the onset of HMO’s and new medical limitations relating to psychiatric services triggered Mary’s desire to share some of life’s truths via the play.  A national tour of the play is in the works.

In comes Crystal Stone, as she sought to be a part of the play.  Crystal, being a graduate of Prairie View A&M where she studied Theatre Arts, she was able to secure a total of 5 characters in the play.  Like, Crystal, the other members of the Tamar Entertainment group originally came looking for parts in the play, then after receiving skillful tutelage on how to run a business from the ground up from Mary and Sheryl, everyone was able to branch out and open their own individual business, while remaining an active part of Tamar Entertainment Inc.

Ms. Crystal Stone owns Krisstylz Dance Company where she teaches ballet, jazz, tap and praise dance.   Crystal offers her dance classes for free because she does not want the opportunity for a child to be missed simply because their parents could not afford it.  Crystal not only teaches the kids how to dance, but she also makes sure to teach them affirmations; affirmations of how the power lies within you, self-esteem building, and other issues.   Further, Crystal is starting to work with schools on an Anti-Bullying Program because she does not want to be at fault for just talking about it, but for actually being a part of the change.  Now I am not sure what that says to anyone else, but to me that says that Crystal’s passion has a heartbeat.  Crystal also owns C. Stone Management where she secures the best jobs for Models, Actors, Music, and Dance Artist, as well as providing Models/Pageant Manager and Consultant services, press kits, and website services.

Ms. Laquita Thompson owns Xtreme Heat Sports Management where she serves as a Sports Agent.  She teaches the kids to treat their talents like a business, and then she shows them how to conduct business, along with how to carry themselves with their talents.  Laquita played semi-pro basketball for the WUBA’s Houston Blaze until a recurring knee injury ended her career as a player.  Laquita is now a certified Science Teacher with the Board of Education in Texas, and she taught Integrated Physics and Chemistry for six years.  Laquita participates in summer AAU Basketball where she is a certified summer Coach with the NCAA Coaches Association.  She is also a certified Personal Fitness Trainer, WNBA Sports Agent, and the “First” female coach in the Fort Bend ISD in the state of Texas to coach High School basketball at Hightower High School where she lead them to the District Championship  in the 2002-2003 season.

Mr. Troy Barnett branched out to create Phat Barz Records & Multimedia L.L.C.  A musician from the age of 10, Troy’s first instrument was a trumpet.  Through his high school years, Troy expanded his talents and skills to the entire brass family of instruments.  At the age of 16 Troy formed his own five member jazz band, and they performed in jazz clubs throughout the city of Houston, TX.  Troy later taught himself to play the organ and the piano before attending Texas Southern and Sam Houston State Universities.  Troy is now a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and the Writers Guild of America.  Troy has played for national recording artist such as Kim Burrell, and he has shared the stage with legends such as Wynton Marsalis and Dr. Shirley Caesar.

Now although Tamar Entertainment is self-sufficient with a graphic artist, their own recording studio, and their own marketing team, they are still in need of corporate sponsorships to fund their Community Arts Center, Phoenix Rising.  The arts center is located in a low-income area in Houston, TX., but it is a beautiful old church building waiting to bear good fruits.

As soon as they can obtain enough money from sponsorships, they plan to make great things come out of the Community Arts Center.  Phoenix Rising will be used for annual summer camps, among a host of other needed activities for the kids.  Crystal informed me that Tamar Entertainment Inc. wants to be able to promote new talent (actors, writers, etc.) and display the work for the community.  “We love kids and we love camps.  All of our companies service the community.  We have worked throughout the community for years, and it will be nice to have our own place to service the community from”, says Crystal.  Crystal added that they have kids that attended their camps in the past that still contact them to talk when they have had a bad day.

All members of Tamar Entertainment Inc. are focused on what they are really here to do, and they need resources and funding so they can continue to do these things and get bigger and better to serve more people effectively and successfully.  It is not only the play, but it is a part of all that they do that is “For Your Soul’s Sake”!!!

You can learn more about everyone at Tamar Entertainment Inc. and their individual companies and sponsorship opportunities when you visit them at www.tamarentertainment.com or call                  281-761-5460; help them make the dreams of financially challenged children come true for generations to come.

Born into a musical family, as well as having a Pastor for a father, Jason Bare was pre-ordained to be both a Gospel Artist and a Pastor of praise and worship.  At the tender age of 4, Jason began to play the keys at his father’s church, and by the time he was 12 Jason was writing songs of praise and worship.  Jason continued to progress and develop his writing skills, as well as his vocal and instrumental gifts. Having fine tuned his gifts and having accumulated material from his life’s journey, including his Cousin Amanda’s life and the impact of her death, Jason is now ready to unveil his debut CD justly titled Beautiful Design.

The title song track is one that Jason wrote with his cousin Amanda many years ago, but they never finished it and as time passed, Jason actually forgot the place in which he had stored the song; for eight years, he tirelessly searched for that song, not yet knowing the significance of its existence.

His cousin Amanda was weighted down with the stronghold of drug addiction for much of her life, even during the time she wrote the song with Jason.  After a lifetime of battling her addiction, Amanda appeared to have been turning her life around and getting it together, but in 2009 at the age of 27, Amanda died suddenly of a medically induced drug overdose.  While packing for her funeral on the day of her death, Jason found the song he had written with Amanda, and it was then that he realized the significance of that song.

“I had searched for that song for years, and when I found it on the exact day she died, I knew it had to be a God-thing.  I told her parents I had found it, and they asked me to sing it for her funeral.  I wanted to put that song on the new CD so that Amanda’s life would be a beacon of hope for people.  It also became a catalyst for me to get serious about music and use my life to make a difference for other people.”  Remembering that Amanda had always said that the song was her story of grace, Jason was able to complete the last line in the chorus that he and Amanda had never gotten to, and now with and like the death of his cousin Amanda, it is finished….it is done.

It has now been almost 15 years since Jason first began his journey of music ministry, but he feels as though he is just getting started.  He now knows what God has called him to do, and he does not want to leave this earth with regrets of not walking in God’s purpose for his life.  With God’s strength, Jason has defeated his fear of rejection and of not being worthy or good enough to be a gospel artist.  Jason confesses that God helped him to realize that if God called him to do it, then God will also equip him to do it.  Consequently, the thing that Jason wants most from the release of this CD is for people to find confidence in who they are in Christ, and for people to know that no matter what your calling is, fear not because you can not go wrong walking in the footsteps of Christ; do not hesitate to share with the world what God has given you; “We are God’s mouthpiece and He uses us to go forth and accomplish things for Him”.

The Beautiful Design CD is the personification of praise and worship. The entire CD has a perfect mix of jazz, rock, and traditional gospel tracks, and it is vocally crafted to give everyone the pleasure of an ultimate devotion experience of praise and worship.  The CD has already gained national attention and will be played in all Chick-Fil-A and Carmax locations nationwide.  The CD is scheduled to drop on January 18, 2011 and the title track Beautiful Design is now available on www.amazon.com

Ah yes, the holidays.  A season of laughter and smiles, joy to the world and good will towards man.  The spirit of giving is in the air, love is abundant, and selfishness is non-existent.  Yet, unfortunately while most people experience joy and cheer during the holidays, there are others who experience the holiday “blues”.  The reality for most is that at the same time when the majority of people are busy planning their holiday parties and social gatherings, there are those, who instead, are feeling miserable, hopeless, lonely, anxious and depressed.

Curious to know exactly what it is about the holidays that always seems to bring about depression, I searched the internet for answers.  During my search, I came across an article titled ‘How to Overcome the Holiday “blues”’.  The article was written by

Dr. Larry Alan Nadig, Ph.D., who is a Clinical Psychologist and Family & Marriage Therapist out of Glendale, CA.  The doctor’s article listed a number of different reasons why people suffer the holiday blues.  The reasons ranged from unresolved issues of past losses, unresolved grief, unmet needs, and a sense of increased isolation and loneliness to the stress of the extra demands on our time, energy, attention and finances, just to name a few.

Intrigued, I contacted Dr. Nadig for further answers on coping with depression during the holidays.  Dr. Nadig kindly expressed to me that a person should first realize that the bad feelings are not the problem, but a symptom of a problem, and that instead of focusing on and/or avoiding the bad feelings, focus should be on the issue.  He went on to say that we can get over something intellectually, but not emotionally.  In other words, our mind can tell us that we are over the problem, but deep down inside, we may have yet to really heal.  Dr. Nadig stresses that when a person is emotionally overwhelmed and feels as though they can not get a handle on things to seek help in talking with someone.

Having lost two sisters, my nephew, and my grandmother, I wanted to ask the doctor about how to deal with loss.  He advised that whatever type of loss you are experiencing, be it the loss of a loved one, loss of meaning and purpose, health, body part, important material things and so on, you should finish grieving.  Accept the loss and the feelings that go along with the loss and the intensity of the bad feelings will lessen.  More importantly, Dr. Nadig expressed that he did not have the answer for every scenario of depression.  However, he stated that if a person has unresolved issues in their life, he has three principles that if applied properly, will help to enable you to overcome those holiday blues.  The three principles are the first verse of the Serenity Prayer which reads, “God grant me the serenity to (1) accept the things I can not change, (2) the courage to change the things I can, and (3) the wisdom to know the difference.”

I believe that the holidays really are a very special period of time when we all come together as one nation under God; Holidays are a part of the best times of our lives, and   sorrowfully for some, they are also a part of the worst times.  Yet, they do not have to remain to be the worst times.  If we embrace and find a way of resolving the true issues of our problems, the holidays can become survivable; Through Jesus Christ, all things are possible.  I thank Dr. Nadig for his wisdom…it helped to ease my pain this holiday season.  I pray that it serves to help others as well.

God bless, and Happy Holidays!!!
